The Ben I Knew

Ben's Mom, Kim and I, are first cousins and have been pretty close since she was the flower girl at my wedding and since she carried on the tradition of keeping the name "Hope" in the family. Ben has touched my life many times over the years and perhaps more so in recent times. He had often said to me "If you've got something you need done, let me know. I need to be kept busy". And ever the opportunist, I gave him whatever work I could find around my house and fed him for his efforts. I usually had to pick him up from the Northwest corner of Waterloo early on and driving all the way back to the East end of Kitchener, which is a long trek for someone who gets carsick. In the cold weather I was always a little concerned when he started turning a greenish hue and it was too cold to open the windows. He was always glad, then, when spring arrived and I'd pick him up on the Harley, where he could feel the wind in his hair and where he retained his usual skin colour. Sometimes we'd go on a road trip and he loved to visit my sister Deb and her husband Jake in Heidelberg, or just take a ride on the back roads, if I had the time. Ben had a wicked sense of humour and always gave as good as he got. He adored Jake's wit and Deb's retorts. Ben and I never did get to visit Deb and Jake at their retirement place in Point Clarke as we'd planned on the Sunday after he died, but next time I go, I know he'll be there in spirit. And I won't ever look at my house again, and the improvements I've made over the years, without seeing Ben's handiwork. Love you, Ben, and I'll miss you. Diana
