The Memorial Candle Program has been designed to help offset the costs associated with the hosting this Tribute Website in perpetuity. Through the lighting of a memorial candle, your thoughtful gesture will be recorded in the Book of Memories and the proceeds will go directly towards helping ensure that the family and friends of Wayne Hessel can continue to memorialize, re-visit, interact with each other and enhance this tribute for future generations.

Condolences

Condolence From: Robert Ambrose
Condolence: My condolences to your family, and sorry that I did not become aware of this until recently.
I was in Scouts with Wayne (would have been his Patrol Leader), and also remember him from Grand River Collegiate. I moved away from the area in the early 1990s.

Condolence: One of my favourite memories of Wayne happened at Everton Scout Camp. Wayne and I were there with a group of MedVents, who were providing first aid for a big camp. On the first evening, we had a “leaders meeting” which Wayne and I attended. When it came time for us to tell all the other leaders about what we were there for, Wayne spoke up.

You might notice a pattern to his dissertation:

“We’re here to help people when they get hurt. So if you have a cut and need a bandaid, no problem …
Bring coffee

If you are feeling sick and want someone to check you out, no problem …
Bring coffee

If you fell and broke a bone, and need more serious attention. No problem we’ve got you covered …
Bring coffee

If you’re feeling a little homesick and want someone to help you feel better, no problem …
Bring coffee

If you just want to stop us along the trail to chat, no problem …
Bring coffee”

To me, this moment embodied who Wayne is. Connected. Connected with the people he met on the trail. Coffee was just a good excuse to slow down and talk (and if you ever had coffee with Wayne at Tim Horton’s you’ll know what I mean!)

There was nothing Wayne did that wasn’t about connecting with people. He loved people and the social time that came with it. I know it’s why he loved Scouting … people. He’ll be missed.

I miss him. He was a friend, a mentor and just fun to be with.

Linda, Ashley, Lisa, Ben and everyone else in the family … you are loved. Wayne made sure of that … and although I know he leaves a hole in your life, he’ll never leave your heart.

Condolence: Our hearts and big hugs go out to Linda (aka Bubbles), Ashley, Lisa/Dan, Benjamin/Carlee, all Wayne's grandkids and all the rest of his family in this time of loss and grief. We are all going to miss his sense of humour. He was a crusty marshmallow with such a soft, caring inside that came out especially in his patient transfers and with his grandkids. Wayne will be fondly in all our hearts and memories.

Condolence: It saddens me to say goodbye to a valued Scouter, a Dutch Oven master but most importantly a friend. I will always remember your smile and laughter and trying to convince my little ones to eat the Froot Loops over the Rice Krispies.

Condolence: Wayne was such a large presence. I only knew him through work as I'm a broker in London but with Wayne it was never a competition. When I was in KW doing calls we would cross paths often. We'd spend a few mins or a lot of mins waiting on standby and trading war stories from the trucks. He was always there to help a fellow Broker when I was just starting out and had a hundred questions. Wayne was just a tremendous person to be around, always in a good mood, ready with a joke or some smirk comment "get outta my city!" ..... He was one of the good ones. Rest easy Wayne.
