The Memorial Candle Program has been designed to help offset the costs associated with the hosting this Tribute Website in perpetuity. Through the lighting of a memorial candle, your thoughtful gesture will be recorded in the Book of Memories and the proceeds will go directly towards helping ensure that the family and friends of George Bechtel can continue to memorialize, re-visit, interact with each other and enhance this tribute for future generations.

Thank you.

Condolence: I never met George but wish I would have...I am very thankful for his effort in preserving the Samuel Bechtel burialground which was also the site of the old Mennonite meetinghouse of 1829 where Mennonites AND Tunkers worshipped. There are still many remains/bones left in this special place even though most gravestones were relocated to Wanner Mennonite. Bishop Benjamin Eby mentioned the BECHTEL MEETINGHOUSE in 1824. as Psalms 16:6 "The lines are fallen unto me in pleasant places; yea, I have a goodly heritage."
Best Regards;

Condolence: My condolences to Grace and the family.George was my favourite teacher at Rockway Mennonite School - last classroom on the left, next to the Library and across from Home Ec. A gentle soul who kindled my love for history. We met later when he was a costumed interpreter at Doon Heritage Crossroads. Grace, we met when you helped our family enjoy reading during your KPL bookmobile visits to Trillium PS. I am sorry that I never got to know George better for the multi-faceted and wonderful person that he was.

Condolence: George and I were room mates in North Hall of Goshen College. In a graceful way he introduced me to Canada, to living in a dorm, to social concerns and British values. As a wedding gift he gave me a plate of fine British China which we use in fond memory of a long friendship.

Condolence: Grace and family, I am so sorry for your loss.

George had a major impact on my life. We worked together at Doon Heritage Crossroads for many years. I think of him every time I walk into the Martin Garden. His passion for gardening reignited my interest in it and I've dug in the dirt ever since. I think of him and his advocacy and passion for rail travel every time I take a train.
