Sam’s time in Thunder Bay, Ontario

Sam spent a couple years in Thunder Bay, Ontario. We were in the same college class together: Television broadcasting. Some of us were only 18 or 19 at the time then and it was our first time away from home. Sam was 4 years older and it seemed like all of the girls I knew found him attractive. It would have been easy to be jealous if not for the fact that Sam was so impossibly cool and charming and nice. Sam at that age never made people feel small. He was inclusive. No matter how nerdy some of us were at the time in comparison to him. No matter how we dressed or what we listened to or what we were into. I remember he and I watching the 2001 NBA Slam Dunk Contest at his rental there in mid-February when Vince Carter of the Toronto Raptors took over and won it. Sam was on his feet in awe and loving it and so was I. Its still regarded as one of the best ever and every time they play it I remember him and being glad to watch that iconic sporting event at his place. He loved his family and had photos up in his rental there and spoke of his family often. Not many of the other students away did have photos of home up or talked about home like he did. I remember his creative ideas in the editing room. He was ahead of his time. Some of the ideas he had for the arts & entertainment show we worked on are the elements that have aged best. He introduced me to some great films and a ton of great music. I saw comedian Norm MacDonald on TV the other day and as I laughed I was reminded of how Sam also had a dry sense of humor and sarcastic delivery. Sam made us laugh often... and you always felt good when you earned his laugh back. As a young man then I leaned on him for advice in several ways. It was good advice then and it still is now and I feel lucky to have known him.
