I met Alan just a couple of times, crossing paths at Palestine solidarity meetings. We never really talked. But in 2003 I did obtain from him a copy of his remarkable Free Press newsletter with its deeply informed and critical take on, among other things, Canada's role in supporting Israel's oppression of the Palestinians. Over the last eighteen months of COVID times I have written a book about my own 30-year involvement in Palestine solidarity politics. Chapter Four recalls and quotes Alan's letter to the editor regarding Norman Finkelstein's famous talk at UW in 2003. I've also included a camera shot of the cover of the Free Press. Wanting to contact Alan to obtain permission for this inclusion I came upon this obituary from two years ago. It has left me saddened. I grew up in Liverpool - not far from Manchester - before emigrating to Canada in 1968 at the age of 21. i was looking forward to finally talking to him about this whole matter. But it's not to be. If any members of his family read this "story" I would be grateful if they would contact me at peglin@wlu.ca so that we may discuss the matter of the permission I am seeking. I wish I had known him better.
